German cannibal says human flesh tastes like pork
Oct 17th, 2007 by Paul Moor
Well, chalk up another television first: Germany’s Armin Meiwes (pronounced My-vess), presently serving a life sentence for killing a man and eating more than twenty pounds of him, has granted his first television interview, during which, to quote the newsmagazine Der Spiegel, he “describes the taste of human flesh, provides a decent recipe for steak, explains his fascination with the fairy tale Hänsel and Gretel — and insists that he’s a normal person.”
Yeah, sure…..
As Meiwes told it Monday night on the commercial RTL channel, his victim Bernd Brandes, 42, actually begged Meiwes to devour him. Naturally I could kick myself for missing this giant leap forward in big-league television journalism, but honesty compels me to confess that I simply didn’t know about it (and by long habit, to tell you the truth, I almost totally avoid commercial television here in Germany, not only because of the pestilential American-style commercials but primarily because of the absolute bonanza of truly worthwhile fare available from the fairly numerous non-commercial stations). Rest assured, naturally, that I’ll keep a sharp eye out for any repeats of this coup, which almost inevitably will come.
If you feel you have the stomach to stand the entire Spiegel account, I’ve done you the socio-educational favor of making it available by merely clicking here. There you can also treat your eyes to an enlargeable color portrait of Herrn Meiwes – actually a rather nice-looking fellow you’d almost certainly not take for a cannibal if you found him across a table from you in one of Germany’s countless McDonald’s outposts. If you read German, you might even want to treat yourself to RTL’s own far more detailed account by clicking here. .

There seems to be not depths the media won’t sink to in its effort to attract an audience. The writer and the TV producers are partly responsible for any copy-cat killings. Of course that will make a great story”
